Work Life Balance Makes You Feel More in Control
There are many struggles people encounter when it comes to balancing their personal and professional lives. When everything is at an imbalance, it can feel like your life is spiraling out of control.
It’s almost a helpless feeling, even though everything is well within your control to take corrective measures. Work-life balance is a phrase many people use to reflect a cooperative schedule between their personal and professional lives.
When you can positively achieve this state, you are no longer rendered powerless in the situation, but are instead empowered by your ability to be in full control of where you focus your attention, for how long, and at what level.
Life, for many people, is something that simply happens to them. They are characters in a movie where someone else has created a script of what will unfold. But once you realize that you’re the author of your script, work-life balance takes on a whole new meaning.
You want to start by controlling your schedule. You have to understand how much time tasks take so you know how much to devote to each goal, milestone and project. Don’t guess at this.
You want to have firm facts and figures so that you’re able to regain control over your life. You want to give yourself enough minutes or hours to get things done, even with a slight buffer, but not so much that you’re wasting time that could be better spent elsewhere.
If you’re used to dealing with others in some capacity – whether in work or at home – make sure you can say no to things whenever it poses a threat to your work-life balance.
Of course, some things, such as rearing children together, should be a case of joint responsibility. But other things, like running an errand for someone else just because they want to make lunch plans with a friend, aren’t required if you’re busy with your own schedule already.
Keep in mind that where will be some days when it feels impossible for your work and personal life to have equal attention from you, and that’s okay. The idea is not to strive for perfection, but for some semblance of normalcy where you feel capable of meeting all of your responsibilities.
Your goal is to thrive in your career, being able to put forth the qualities of a leader, yet enjoy the rewards of your efforts, by taking time to relax, unwind and nurture your needs outside of the workplace, too.
